An Efficient Approach for Road Network Model Facing Location-based Navigation

Abstract. Shortest-path problem is one of the key techniques in navigation systems, where the road networks are often very large and queries have to be answered in real-time. A speed-up technique called VOA (Virtual-built Overlay Area) hierarchy was applied to various road map graphs. It was found that the VOA hierarchy of Chinese countrywide road network (currently more than 2,000,000 roads) can be constructed within 25 minutes. The query time less than 200ms (90% queries) is more than fast enough for interactive use. For the covering abstract see ITRD E140665.
