Opportunistic spectrum access for cognitive radio

Kamran Arshad · 2008

Dr Arshad discussed that recent measurements from many regulators indicate that large portions of the assigned spectrum remain unused for a significant portion of time at various locations. This underutilization of spectrum on one hand and spectrum demand for emerging technology on the other hand has had profound impact on wireless communication research community. Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) or Opportunistic Spectrum Access (OSA) is proposed to solve the problem of spectrum scarcity and inefficient use of spectrum. In OSA, secondary users are allowed to get access to spectrum bands which are allocated to primary users when they are not using it without creating any harmful interference. Cognitive Radio (CR) is the enabling technology that provides the capability to use spectrum in an opportunistic manner. One of the main challenges of using Cognitive Radio for OSA is accurate and reliable spectrum sensing.
