RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN IC CARD TICKETS IN JAPAN

Japan's largest passenger railway company, JR East, has been using its integrated circuit (IC) card ticket system, Super Urban Intelligent Card (SUICA), since November 2001. Today, more than 8 million passengers are holding Suica cards. The article reviews the JR East initiative of developing and introducing magnetic card ticket system that enables users to make transfers from rail to bus without having to purchase individual tickets each time they travel.
