As the number of electronic control units (ECUs) in an automobile steadily increases, demand for increasing the number of ECUs connected to Controller Area Network (CAN) also rises significantly. However, the number of connectable ECUs in a linear passive star of CAN is restricted because of the ringing phenomenon in communication signals. In this paper, the authors propose a ringing restraining circuit activated on high level ringing voltages. As a result, they can expand the number of connectable ECUs in a linear passive star, which enables the construction of low-cost communication networks by reducing the number of gateways.
