Richard Harris, S Tarry, R R Mudge, K G Keen · 2004

Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) include a wide range of tools and services derived from information and communications technologies. ITS can be categorised under the following main headings (as identified by the European Commission FRAME Architecture project): 1. automated traffic management systems; 2. support for public transport operation; 3. traveller information services; 4. freight and fleet management; 5. management of emergencies; 6. electronic payment systems; and 7. advanced in-vehicle technologies. ITS can be used to address a wide range of policy objectives including enhanced safety, improved accessibility to services and reduced environmental impact of transport. They have the potential to deliver significant benefits with respect to operational efficiency, service reliability, infrastructure management and provide valuable information services for transport users.
