Driving with a DIVA

Jean-Louis Golbery · Traffic Technology International · 2005

The A86 West section of highway is the missing link in the 80km long A86 ring road around Paris. The underground link is now possible due to recent advances in tunnel boring technology. It will be bored 20-90m deep and will feature two superposed independent carriageways. Access to the tunnel will be reserved for light personal and commercial vehicles that are less than 2m in height. The DIVA concept (Detection Instantanee des Vehiculares Arretes or Instant Detection of Stopped Vehicles) from Citilog is a dedicated video-based incident detection system developed for the tunnel project owner, Cofiroute. The video detection system operates over 350 colour cameras positioned every 100m on average attached to the tunnel ceiling at a 2.2m height between the two-lane carriageways. Two parallel analysers will simultaneously process the camera images and report anomalies in less than 20 seconds. Different algorithms are used for different applications making it a real plug-and-detect system. The long-term implications for DIVA are outlined.
