In the absence of advanced traffic-management and control systems, access to traffic information can help the commuter make the best choice of routes. TrafficAlert is a commercial product that allows subscribers to view real-time route-specific traffic and weather information. While TrafficAlert does not provide a system-wide solution, it does provide assistance based on the marketability of the service. This paper describes TrafficAlert in detail, with emphasis on background developments, system design, traffic information user interface, and project extensions.
