An Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) technical architecture has been developed based on IEEE 1609 Wireless Access for Vehicular Environments (WAVE) standards for secure vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure wireless communication. This study examines the wireless security technology, IEEE 1609.2, WAVE Security Services for Applications and Management Messages, as an Identity and Access Management solution to the challenges of the ITS model program. An examination of the working model demonstrates the use of a 1609.2 Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) to manage ITS actors, messaging and applications using DSRC/WAVE communication services.
