Two meetings in London, UK, provided information on the current status of road user charging (RUC) in Europe. These were a seminar organized by the IEE Automotive and Road Transport Systems Professional Network on the technical and operational developments of RUC and a meeting of ITS (UK) on road user and congestion charging. Projects covered by the IEE seminar included the UK-based DIRECTS project for RUC. An overview of the London congestion charging scheme was presented at both meetings. The Swiss system of lorry road charging, based on a combination of DSRC and GPS/GSM technologies, is outlined. Plans for a national lorry RUC in Sweden are described.
