The aim of laboratory analyses of ceramics in archaeology, April 7-9, 1995 in Lund, Sweden

The 15 articles in this book were read and discussed at a conference honoring Birgita Hulthen, a Swedish ceramologist who established laboratory facilities for ceramic analyses at the Department of Archaeology, Lund University, Sweden, in 1971. The prefatory essays honor Hulthen and include a bibliography of her works (1974-95): seven monographs, 49 articles, and one review. The conference theme stressed the need for the broad study of ceramics in archaeological and ethnographic contexts in order to reconstruct the relationships between raw materials, fabrication, use, and social setting. The Society for Archaeological Ceramology (SAC) was founded to address the need for closer collaboration between ceramic specialists. Individual chapters are abstracted in this issue of AATA .
