Sophisticated ICs are key enabling technology for Flexray
T Versluijs · 2006
Flexray v2.1 will be used for active damping control on BMW's successor to the X5 model. Flexray standard development is driven by an industry-wide consortium including BMW, Volkswagen and DaimlerChrysler. Flexray was conceived with a 10Mbit/s bandwidth, built-in fault tolerance, deterministic nature, the ability to accommodate multiple network topologies and the ability to be scalable. The implications of Flexray development for Can and Lin buses are considered. The progressive use of Flexray is assured as it reduces overall complexity and offers a path for more cost-effective design. Coordinating electronic control unit operators with a collection of Can buses is becoming more complex and is impeding x-by-wire progress. An example of the use of Flexray in an advanced automobile network topology is given. Flexray can be configured in passive bus and/or star topologies. The implications for chip companies are considered. (A)
