Traffic and transport information systems

D P Bowyer, M A Taylor · 1985

Recent advances in microcomputer technology appear to open many possibilities for low cost means of capturing traffic and travel data and for assisting in converting these data into information of use in decision making. This paper describes the full range of tasks and indicates the status of development and application of appropriate microcomputer based techniques. Particular systems are used as examples. The tasks of interest are those required to satisfy the primary functions of data capture, processing and communication. The set of tasks can be classified into the following five broad groups: (a) engineering data capture; (b) person data capture; (c) real time communication; (d) integrated retrieval, processing and communication; and (e) knowledge based systems.
