ITS AND METEOROLOGY: A CRITICAL PARTNERSHIP
James A. Schiavone, Robert Puentes, C Eng · 1997
Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) present an excellent opportunity to improve the dissemination of weather information to both the traveling public as well as to decision makers in transportation services. This article will: describe how the transportation and traveling community can benefit from a greater exploitation of weather information; describe the type of weather information that is available to the transportation and traveling community; suggest ideas on how to incorporate weather information into ITS; cite typical examples of initiatives that address the incorporation of weather data into ITS; and encourage a two-way flow of information between the meteorological and transportation communities.
