This paper presents an overview of the European project CEMVOCAS (Centralized Management of VOCal interfaces aiming a better Automotive Safety). The aim of this project was to develop a system to diagnose (in real time) the driver's availability to receive vocal information. After a brief introduction focused on the research context, the methodology used to design & develop this technology is described, and the main results from the prototype evaluation that have been carried out in real driving conditions are provided. Good performances are registered in terms of (a) effectiveness (more than 80 % of the driving situations are correctly identified by CEMVOCAS), (b) efficiency (the managed messages disturbed the drivers less often than the not managed ones), and (c) satisfaction (good user opinion concerning the benefits of the automatic message management in terms of comfort and safety).
