THE NETWORK INFORMATION SYSTEM

This report is presented in an abstract form. The Department of Transport has commissioned Phase 1 of the network information system to cover trunk roads in England. This phase covers needs, data sources, feasibility and outline design of a major computer system to include: data directories; maintenance data; traffic data; accident statistics; construction details; bridge details; lighting data; signs; video records; and other inventory data. This paper details the data needs of the Department and its agents and describes the philosophy and structure of the network information system design. The uses and benefits of this important concept will be clarified, and special attention will be given to the interface with the user. For the covering abstract of the seminar see IRRD 286701. (TRRL)
