THE IMPLICATIONS OF ENGINE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS IN VEHICLE SECURITY

T J Kershaw · 1989

Because many engine management systems incorporate diagnostic serial transmit/receive links with a vehicle's Electronic Control Unit (ECU) microprocessor such features as coded security functions can be included. An ideal place to store security- related information is in Electrically Erasable and Programmable Read Only Memory (EEPROM) within the ECU. Normally used for storage of fault and service data, the memory can also be used to store Vehicle Identification No (VIN) and registration number in a write-once-only mode and accessed by password codes. The paper describes such a system developed for the Rover Security Concept Car. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 850768.
