This article describes the Autonomous Land Vehicle (ALV), an unmanned vehicle with a TV camera and laser for eyes, and a computer using a form of artificial intelligence to interpret the resulting picture and keep the vehicle on the road. The ALV is the most visible part of the Strategic Computing Program, a one-billion-dollar research and development project sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The project's goal is to build machines capable of intelligent, functional behavior. The technology DARPA is testing on the ALV can be applied across the entire artificial intelligence spectrum, including robots assigned to do any number of complex tasks.
