A reliable method of automatic solid identification can be developed by the combined application of remote sensing and digital terrain data. Research results have demonstrated that small differences in soil types can be distinguished by the use of quantitative terrain factors which are computed from digital terrain data. Continuing research effort is directed towards the improvement of the terrain factors, the development of statistical prediction techniques, and testing the effectiveness of these factors in the identification of soils. /Author/
