THEORY OF EVOLUTION

This article considers video network solutions to transport management issues. Increasingly these need to be Internet Protocol-based, but still able to integrate with existing systems. Brief case studies are presented of the use of video surveillance in New York, Hong Kong, and London. Video networks need a modular communications platform, as they are used for other non-traffic management and security applications. Requirements of modern solutions include structures to prevent failure from affecting other parts of the network; real-time diagnostics; interfacing; monitoring; control and compression; transfer; and dynamic management.
