A Two-Mode Algorithm for Combined Power Control and Base Station Assignment

Seong‐Lyun Kim · Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications · 1999

This work proposes an uplink power control algorithm that, compared with conventional single mode power control, significantly enhances the radio network capacity with a very small amount of extra effort. The proposed algorithm has two modes, normal and congestion. Under the normal mode, the algorithm continues power control njith a giver, hasp station assignment. On the contrary, under the congestion mode, the algorithm executes both power control and base station assignment (handoff) simultaleously. The proposed Two-mode Power Control (TMPC) is distributed so that each mobile can, with local measurement information, manage power control, base station assignment and mode change, either synchronously or asynchronously. TMPC is different from the existing algorithms such as CMPA for integrated power control and base station assignrnent in that it executes base station assignment only under the congestion mode. Therefore, far less burden is brought to combining power control and base assignment. Computational experiments have been carried out on a DS-CDMA system, showing that TMPC has only less than 10% of signaling and computational burden of CMPA while giving the same amount of capacity increase as CMPA does.
