A more holistic approach is needed

The amount and complexity of electronics in new cars is increasing, requiring more design input and longer development time. New 32 bit microcontroller units based on a risc processor core have been developed specifically with scalability, flexibility and reliability in mind for the automotive sector. The MCUs have a range of software-compatible cores for different applications. Flexibility is key to resolving the conflict between the drive towards standardisation and the desire for different requirements. The latest MCUs have a working voltage range of 3 to 5.5V, enabling the use of 3 or 5V systems. The ability of cross manufacturer initiatives such as HIS (manufacture software initiative) and Autosar (automotive open system architecture) to meet the new challenges is discussed.
