In recent years, the electronic toll collection system has been studied and developed enthusiastically due to such merits as reduction of traffic jams at toll plazas, off loading of work of toll collectors and cashless systems. In the system using radio frequency, On Board Equipment (OBE) is mounted on the vehicle to communicate with Road Side Equipment (RSE) through interrogator antenna in order to make a pre-paid system, which can record such information as toll data of the OBE. It is necessary to make radio communications within the limited period of time and within the limited area of communication in order to read the information in the OBE of the vehicle and to write such data as toll information without stopping the running vehicle. The non-stop performance that is the major goal of the electronic toll collection system depends on the processing period. The authors have developed a system that can communicate between the OBE and the RSE in 2.45 GHz band with 300 kbps using sector beam antenna. This system can read the information of the OBE, test data and write back the information to the OBE while a vehicle is running at 340 km/h and passing through the communication zone which consists of a sector beam antenna. The quantity of information exchanged is assumed to be the same as that of actual operation. The authors report the configuration and experiment results in this paper. They believe that the same results will be obtained in 5.8 GHz band.
