The great enabler

The vehicle networking technology known as Wireless Access in a Vehicle Environment (WAVE) is built on top of Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) radios. Raytheon's Highway Transportation Management Systems (HTMS) is contributing to the emerging technology by finalising many of the IEEE standards and by defining the architecture for the prototype units as a member of the DSRC Industry Consortium. The communication standards (IEEE 802.11p, 1609 and 1556) are in the final rounds of approval. The OmniAir Consortium was founded to advance interoperable DSRC through certification. Efforts to ensure true interoperability for application or standard software are outlined. National interoperability is illustrated by the electronic toll collection E-Zpass system in the USA. Toll operators are evaluating the new 5.9GHz DSRC systems for electronic toll collection.
