AUTOMATED MARINE VHF RADIOTELEPHONE USING A TDMA/SELCALL TECHNIQUE

J J Fee, C S Mathews · 1979

RTCM/SC-71 is chartered to develop the concepts, techniques and procedures required for a nationally standardized system to automate VHF radio-telephone. The concept presented here was developed by the authors for this purpose and utilizes the internationally standardized SELCALL signaling format in conjunction with a common contacting channel which is time-shared among physically proximate shore stations. The overall concept is developed and specific SELCALL messages are defined for the purpose of telephone call set-up. The signal flow and contact sequencing is described for both ship-to-shore and shore-to-ship call set-up. An analysis of the system capacity and quality of service is presented as a function of the level of traffic intensity and degree to which working channels are pooled.
