AUTOMATIC TRAIN CONTROL WITH ON-BOARD COMPUTERS

Since 1981, automatic train control (ATC) devices have been used to maintain a safe distance between trains on the Yamanote and Keihin-Tohoku lines in Tokyo. Although shorter train headways have long been desired in order to increase line capacities, this has been impossible with conventional ATC. This paper describes a new digital ATC (DATC) system developed by the authors to replace the existing conventional ATC. With digital transmission and on-board intelligence, the DATC system enables a reduction in train headways during peak hours at a lower cost.
