The Role of Maps in Vehicle-Infrastructure Cooperation

Upon initial evaluation, the role of maps in Vehicle-Infrastructure Cooperation may not be obvious. It is clear just from the name that the system needs vehicles, roads, and a method for vehicles to communicate with each other and the infrastructure. From a stakeholder perspective, all this easily translates into tangible products and services from automakers, road operators, and each of their first tier suppliers. Products and services from mapmakers may not be as clearly understood upon a cursory evaluation. However, as soon as the system is considered for deployment in an operational context, the role of the map, is suddenly an essential ingredient to success. It is the map that allows the vehicles to know where they are on a road, and it is a common map that lets them know where they are in relation to each other. And it is the map that allows the infrastructure managers to reference all the vehicles to specific locations and make geographic sense out of the messages they are receiving. It is truly the map that enables the entities within the system to cooperate with one another.
