Capital Wireless Integrated Network (CapWIN)

William T. Scherer, Marc H. Evans · 2004

This report documents the efforts of the University of Virginia's Smart Travel Laboratory (UVA-STL) in a synergistic sponsored program between the ITS Implementation Center and the National Institute of Justice for developing mechanisms to provide the Capital Wireless Integrated Network (CapWIN) participants with meaningful system awareness through unique applications of data fusion and visualization of the state of their metropolitan public service wide area network. For the purposes of this research, the public service networks information of interest were the arterial and freeway traffic flow, and the mechanisms for which the authors sought to provide information assurance monitoring included in the still theoretical (though simulated) combined technological components and participants of the Capital Wireless Integrated Network. The authors describe the overall concept and present the elements of the system and a sample walk through the system.
