Needs and challenges

There are many needs in the traffic engineering field, which relate to defined areas. Improved utilisation of new technology, understanding the way to its successful introduction and active involvement in improving available software solutions is a critical challenge. Learning to work within a broader framework and considering the contribution which other disciplines can provide towards a total solution is a further objective to which we should all aspire. There are increasing community demands for involvement and consultation which will require professionally comprehensive and accurate advice from us all plus an ongoing preparedness to face up to problems, debate them and produce and modify solutions. Finally, we need to work together particularly at state and local government level and in conjunction with the research institutions, to produce the coordination and mutual assistance which will provide major community benefit (a).
