TRAFFIC IMAGE SENSOR FOR VEHICLE-ACTUATED LOCAL CONTROL

Osamu Saitô · 1998

In Japan, ultrasonic and optical types of vehicle sensors, and overseas, an electromagnetic loop type of vehicle sensor, are usually used to control the traffic signals at intersections. Although an image type of vehicle sensor also has recently come to be used, it is not yet commonly used for traffic signal control. However, widespread use of this image sensor for traffic signal control in the future is most likely. Under these circumstances, a traffic image sensor has been developed for vehicle-actuated local control and evaluation tests on this traffic image sensor performed. It contains new algorithms that are based on normalized-pattern correlation and on reference road learning and matches the traffic modes of vehicles at intersections. Because of its compact size, this traffic image sensor can be built into a traffic signal controller. This article reports the principles of vehicle detection using the traffic image sensor, and its test results. For the covering abstract see IRRD E102946.
