BUILDING DIGITAL MAPS FOR PATHFINDING
George T. Angwin, Madeleine Heideman · 1993
This paper describes special requirements and additional attributes to support pathfinding software. These attributes include a functional classification of the roads, over-passes, one-ways, and driving restrictions (such as left-turn restrictions). Many of these additional road attributes cannot be gotten from paper sources, so it is necessary to send survey teams to the field to collect the data. There are a number of pitfalls in the collection and interpretation of this data that can be avoided with awareness of them. For example, entering driving restriction data into the map has interactions with the network update that must be taken into account.
