Retrieval of line drawings

The usefulness of a collection of scanned documents must be measured by the facilities available for retrieval. Whereas most existing document management systems do not index line drawings (unless it is done manually), we propose a method to index line drawings automatically. Our method uses a weighted information retrieval system. 1 Introduction The advent of large optical disks and disk arrays has accelerated the conversion of large volumes of paper documents into electronic raster images (i.e. two-dimensional arrays of pixels). The usefulness of such collections must be measured by the facilities available to retrieve documents. This makes fast and accurate indexing of optically stored documents inevitably important. Imaging systems must be considered as a modern variant of microfiches. Their main aim is to save on the physical space needed to store documents.
