Active Video: A Novel Approach to Video Distribution.
Kazem Najafi, Alberto Leon‐Garcia · 1999
Active video is a novel representation of video whereby visual data is augmented with intelligence. The extreme heterogeneity of the Internet and the demanding nature of video traffic has created many challenges for delivery of video over the Internet. This paper reviews the previous work in this area. Recent developments in these areas including object-based video coding, content-based scalability and active networks are reviewed. A novel approach for video delivery is proposed that incorporates intelligence into visual data, and employs active networks for transport. Video data and methods packed in an active video object, use the resources offered by the active network routers, in order to efficiently make their way to their destinations. Advantages of this method over three traditional schemes are described.
