The COMUNICAR project, co-funded by DG INFSO of EU (IST 1999 - 11595), intends to design and develop an on-vehicle multimedia HMI (Human Machine Interface) able to manage the messages oncoming from new and traditional functions for the driving support (e.g. frontal collision warning, lane warning, car phone, route navigation system, traffic information, Internet, etc.). Since that the amount of information coming from these systems can be a benefit for the driver if the HMI avoids any overload and it reduces to the minimum the messages overlapping, COMUNICAR is aimed to provide the best interaction with the on-board information system according to the environmental conditions and the level of activity of the driver in the primary task. In this paper the logic according to which the COMUNICAR HMI will work to aim this objective is presented and described. For the covering abstract see ITRD E122427.
