Commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) middleware addresses many design forces for developing mission-critical distributed systems, including reducing development cost and cycle-time. However, meeting additional requirements for real-time quality of service (QoS) in these systems is currently beyond the state-of-the-art in available COTS middleware solutions. In this paper, we discuss key research challenges associated with determining the policies, mechanisms, and patterns required to create a new generation of QoS-enabled COTS middleware for real-time mission-critical systems. 1 Introduction Limitations with current practice: Due to constraints on footprint, performance, and weight/power consumption, development of mission-critical real-time systems has historically lagged far behind mainstream software development methodologies. As a result, real-time software systems are extremely expensive and time-consuming to develop, validate, optimize, deploy, maintain, and upgrade. Moreover, they ...
