Video based traffic data collection

Road research frequently requires vast amounts of data on traffic movements to be collected and analysed. Much of these traffic data are collected at intersections where volumes are high and there are a large number of possible vehicle paths. Photographic and video techniques can be useful means of collecting traffic data. The Australian Road Research Board has developed a new vehicle detection system based on the use of video recording. In high traffic flow situations the ARRB video vehicle detector is able to collect the data easily and accurately. This chapter introduces some methods used to collect video data, briefly describes the ARRB system, and outlines how the latter can be used for particular studies.
