SAFETY CONCEPTS IN X-BY-WIRE-SYSTEMS

Wilfried Achenbach · 2002

This article describes X-by-wire systems that the author maintains will constitute the basis for vehicle control and vehicle assistance systems in the near future. The application of electronics has changed the automobile significantly in terms of functionality and performance capability. In addition it has opened up new possibilities for cooperation between automobile manufacturers and their suppliers. The author predicts that hydraulic and mechanical systems will be replaced by mechatronic systems, and the first important step, brake-by-wire has already been taken. He suggests that even greater functional value will be available to customers by networking these by-wire systems in conjunction with new types of sensor systems. The article describes key elements of X-by-Wire systems.
