AIRPAC: ADVISOR FOR INTELLIGENT RESOLUTION OF PREDICTED AIRCRAFT CONFLICTS

Curtis A. Shively · Transportation research circular · 1986

The AIRPAC system was developed as the result of an investigation into the feasibility of applying knowledge based systems (KBS) techniques to automation of ATC functions. It is an expert system to assist air traffic controllers with planning of resolutions for predicted violations of safe separation between aircraft. AIRPAC uses KBS techniques to suggest aircraft maneuvers that will prevent a conflict. It produces a single best resolution that includes detailed parameters of the recommended aircraft maneuvers. This paper describes AIRPAC's approach and its resolution tactics. The basis of resolution factors are also discussed. AIRPAC's heirarchical planning of resolutions is described, as well as its knowledge representation and application. Implementation of AIRPAC is described, and examples are given of conflict resolution. The benefits of using KBS techniques for automation of aircraft conflict resolution are noted.
