Geographical information systems (GIS) represent an irreplaceable basis for various types of analyses which may be needed in road traffic engineering. This paper describes the use of one component of GIS, geo-referenced video. Geo-referencing is a process of assigning geographic coordinates to spatially oriented information, sets of information, objects or object abstractions. Geo-referenced video is one data layer in GIS applications that enables a new dimension of virtual space visualization and recording from the driver’s perspective, ensures a simplified data collecting process, and gives the opportunity for virtually unlimited data post processing capabilities and detailed analysis. When used for documenting road infrastructure condition, geo-referenced video enables the analysis of road infrastructure from the driver’s perspective in laboratory conditions, which provides basis for accurate data processing and gives opportunity for detailed perception of analyzed objects. The authors report that the experiences at the Institute of Transport and Communications in the reconstruction of the dangerous spots indicate that the geo-reference video approach leads to significant results in reducing the number of accidents and injured persons. In addition, geo-referenced video recording in the function of recording the traffic infrastructure has given excellent results in practice in keeping a digital database on the road infrastructure and road equipment.
