This paper examines the present RUCUS-II (Runcutting and Scheduling) vehicle and crew scheduling system and proposes an alternative organization based on a relational data model. The model exploits the natural relationships among the data elements in urban mass transit systems to reduce storage of redundant data and the overall size of the database. In addition, the number of commands required to do the scheduling is reduced by the introduction of a relational algebra query language augmented by application program macros.
