NAVIGATION AND POSITIONING SYSTEMS

Joseph Chernof · 1971

Omega is an earth-referenced hyperbolic navigation system operating in the internationally allocated navigation band between 10 and 14 kHz. The Omega receiver is phase-locked to signals from three transmitters simultaneously. Phase comparison permits determination of position in a hyperbolic coordinate system. In actual operation, diurnal variations introduce errors in the position fix which must be corrected by sky-wave correction tables. Referring to the table for a given location, day and time, a correction factor is applied to the receiver data. An Omega navigation chart is then used to determine position.
