TRENDS IN AUTOMOTIVE TRANSMISSIONS AND AUTOMATION

The author describes the development of heavy goods vehicle transmission systems and the trend towards automation. The factors influencing developments are considered, in particular convenience and economy. Issues involved in the development of products are discussed including electronics, cost, reliability, industry infrastructure and the definition of an optimum system. The author considers that the trend towards automation will continue providing a) the system developed is cost effective, showing a real payback for the end user and b) the system uses distributed processing.
