Developments in data dictionary standards

Abstract Early data dictionary systems were little more than tools for defining file structures, as is illustrated in Figure 1. Facilities were then rapidly added to make the data dictionary the repository for all information about data, as illustrated in Figure 2. Some systems allow the documentation of many Kinds of file and database and even of manual document structures. Generation facilities to produce data definitions for use by database management systems were added and used to justify the cost of entering data in to the dictionary.
