The goal of this project was the creation of an efficient tool in order to study the road traffic as to find future solutions to control the traffic and reduce both the travel time and negative effects on the environment. This tool should provide cost-efficient and accurate estimation of traffic parameters, so it has been decided to base the estimation on data collected from wireless sensor network, based on ZigBee Magnetic sensor nodes placed next to the road. This project was divided into three main tasks: a hardware part including the design of the tool and its creation, a software part including the on-board programming as well as the design of the network and finally a test and verification part.Future enhancements can already be foreseen: the implementation of the ZigBee protocol can be proposed on top of the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol which is already implemented. One important remaining problem is the power consumption of the nodes, which is still too high. Some duty cycles should be implemented so as to reduce the power consumption of the nodes. The main idea would be that each node sleeps while it is not sensing or transmitting information.
