Some Basic Issues Connected with Fuzzy Analysis

It is essential for the understanding of L. A. Zadeh’ s approach to complex objects to emphasize the distinction between ‘mechanistic’ and ‘ humanistic’ systems. In the case of mechanistic systems one is able to treat them with precise methods of traditional mathematics because the ingredients of such systems can be precisely defined in terms of their inputs, states etc. and because one is able to give conditions on their controllability. In humanistic systems our knowledge is necessarily limited and this is true because of the lack of preciseness that is intrinsically related to the concepts used in such systems. There may be many approaches to overcome these difficulties but according to Zadeh the problem is of a fundamental nature suggesting that we should treat humanistic systems in linguistic rather than numerical terms.
