: While the amount of information available on line in the Internet or in the World Wide Web is increasingly growing, many different systems have been developed to help the user to locate or gather information of interest. In this paper we discuss the main approaches to the design of such systems focusing in particular on the methods used to represent the information available in the Web. 1 Introduction The management of large amounts of information is a critical task for an organization or a workgroup. The growth of information available in various repositories within an organization or on-line through the World Wide Web, makes it difficult for users to gather information of interest, while browsing and keyword-based search become more and more ineffective.
