This paper describes JOMP, a definition and implementation of a set of directives and library methods for shared memory parallel programming in Java. A specification of the OpenMP-like directives and methods is proposed. A prototype implementation, consisting of a compiler and a runtime library (both written entirely in Java) is presented, which implements almost all of the proposed specification. Some preliminary performance results are also presented. 1 Introduction Java has yet to make a significant impact in the field of traditional scientific computing. However, there are a number of reasons why it may do so in the not too distant future. The most obvious benefits are those of portability and ease of software engineering. The former will be particularly important when grid computing comes of age, as a user may not know when they submit it what architecture their job will run on. Using Java is not without its problems: perhaps the prime concern for scientific users is performance...
