Face-to-Face Implies no Interface

Dennis Burford · 2001

It is important to design user interfaces that are intuitive and "natural" to use. This is especially true when computers mediate communication and interaction between people. Collaborative virtual environments (CVEs) encourage just this type of direct interaction. Because facial expressions are essential to face-to-face communication, we believe facial animation for avatars is important to virtual communications of this sort. We present a system for real-time expression tracking and facial animation using facial markers, low-cost cameras and PCs. We have tested our system with live video input and animated three di#erent types of faces, including a 3-D muscle model.
