The eXperience Induction Machine and its Role in the Research on Presence

The eXperience Induction Machine (XIM) is an immersive room equipped with a number of sensors and effectors that has been constructed to conduct experiment in mixed-reality. XIM is an abstraction and further development of its predecessor, the installation “Ada – the intelligent space ” that was built for the Swiss national exhibition Expo02. We will outline the hardware and software infrastructure of XIM, and describe in detail one application of XIM, the Persistent Virtual Community (PVC). We will conclude with the description of the development work currently underway and an outlook of the future public exhibition of the space. 1
