States of Matter and States of Information.

Marion G. Ceruti · Computer Applications in Industry and Engineering · 2002

This paper is an exercise in analogical reasoning. It introduces the concept of “states of information” as analogous to states of matter. It explores the differences in states of matter and the difficulties in their definitions with a view toward explaining the difficulty in defining the various states of information. By taking advantage of the isomorphism that exists between states of matter and states of information, predictions can be made about the future of information management. This paper introduces the newly emerging and interdisciplinary field of “infodynamics.”
