Efficient Scene Descriptions Using Advanced Modelling Techniques in the RenderMan Context

Ryan Schultz, Heidrun Schumann · 2000

In this paper methods for efficient scene storage in the RenderMan context using concepts like instancing (referencing) , procedural objects, and tool objects are discussed. We introduce the concepts for efficient storage in general, give a system overview of a modelling environment using RenderMan, show how these concepts may be used in the RenderMan context and discuss advantages, disadvantages, and possible extensions. Keywords: efficient scene storage, instancing, procedural objects, tool objects, RenderMan 1 Introduction The storage complexity of a scene is an important aspect of rendering because file operations and swapping due to high memory consumption can become extreme time and resource consuming processes. To reduce the amount of memory (on disk as well as in RAM) used for the storage of complex scenes different concepts may be used. These are for example multiresolution techniques, instancing (referencing), procedural objects, and tool objects. However, multiresolution ...
